The supergreen car: automotive technology innovations

ApteraThe Toyota Prius hybrid may be popular, but its gas mileage is only incrementally better than highly efficient gas-fueled cars. If we want radical change in our gas consumption, we’ll need radical change in our cars.

Several new auto manufacturers are cropping up to do just that. The Aptera and NmG cars both cost about $30,000, and each can be entirely powered by electricity at pennies per mile.

Myers Motors NmG carThe Aptera, pictured above, seats two and holds a charge that will last up to 120 miles. The NmG, at right, holds a single person and can drive about half that distance. Both have three wheels rather than four, and surprisingly they both have plenty of storage space.

Both companies are accepting reservations to purchase these cars. Sadly, it’s likely to be many years before we have a dealership here in St. Louis, which could create maintenance challenges. For me, fixing computers is one thing, cars are quite another.

But I’ll keep my fingers crossed…as an eco-friendly company, I would love to have a bright orange NmG company car decked out in a branded vinyl wrap!
